Ph.D.
The Ph.D. programme in Electrical Engineering is by research only. The minimum period of candidature is two years. However, the normal period of full-time study requires a duration of 3 years or six semesters. The Ph.D. candidate is supervised by a lecturer (or a panel of lecturers) from the “graduate faculty”. In the case of panel supervision, co-supervisors may come from industry. The progress of a Ph.D. candidate is assessed through a research progress report submitted at the end of each semester. The degree is awarded based on a comprehensive examination (viva voce) of the doctoral thesis submitted by the candidate on completion of study.

M.Eng. (Electrical)
A full-time study in this programme requires a normal duration of 18 / 24 months (3 to 4 semesters). The minimum period of candidature is one year. An M.Eng. candidate is supervised by a lecturer from the “graduate faculty”. Assessment is by semester progress reports, and the degree is awarded based on a oral examination (viva voce) of the Masters thesis submitted by the student at end of study.

Research Methodology Workshop (ULP 0010)
All new research students are required to attend the Research Methodology Workshop (ULP 0010). This course must be attended once only, after registration.
- Applicable for New Research Student (Only once after first registration).
- Please ensure that you register with ‘HW’ status.
- Please refer to the SPS Website for the schedule at www.sps.utm.my
Thesis Submission and Examination
In the 2nd semester of the Masters’ program and in the 3rd semester of the PhD program, respective research students will undergo a first stage evaluation process. The objective of this evaluation process is to assist and ensure students so that the research they are carrying out are following in the right direction and eventually meet the expectation of the research. Students will receive a copy of the panel report containing suggestion and recommendation that will guide and improve the undertaken work. Prior to submission of the thesis for the oral examination (viva), students must submit a Thesis Submission form at least 3 months before. This is to ensure that approved internal and external examiners have been appointed by the university before the oral examination can take place. Failure to do so may delay the viva process.
Submission of Abstract
In order to expedite the process of hardbound thesis submission, students are advised to correct and submit the abstract immediately after the viva process (if applicable). This is because the abstract will need to be proofread by the graduate faculty working committee members before it can be included in the hardbound thesis and submitted to the university. Since the working committee convenes once a month for this proofreading exercise, any delay in the abstract submission may cause a delay in handing in the thesis.
Plagiarism Checking
Beginning January 2011, all PhD and Master by Research students are required to provide Similarity Index Report when submitting thesis. This is a new requirement that must be adhered by ALL PhD and Master by Research students. When submitting your thesis, you are required to;
- Check your thesis with Turnitin software, to obtain the Similarity Index Report. (Plagiarism Checking Software)
- Perform checking once on the whole thesis. This in return will give you the Similarity Index Report.
- Submit Similarity Index Report for the thesis together with ONE special form from SPS (One form per thesis only). (Please contact SPS on how to obtain this form)
- Similarity must be less than 20%.
- Turnitin is available for use from SPS. Visit this site for more information.
